THE LUXEMBOURG CHAIR

20.02.2012 ways of seating Sam Baron

The Luxembourg Chair is in reality a homage to France, designed in 1923 for the famous public garden of Paris - the so called "Jardin du Luxembourg". Originally produced by the city council technical ateliers, and more recently by the French outdoor furniture company Fermob.

It is a simple outdoor chair, in tubular and sheet aluminum – efficient in lightness and elegance, yet quietly robust to withstand the rigors of the public use and weather. It exists in different versions from classic chair, bench to armchair. The most interesting interpretation is the low armchair, which is the perfect companion for relaxing in the park, chatting with a friend, or basking in the summer sun with legs outstretched and wineglass in hand.
To appreciate the chair we must appreciate its origin, as public seating for “Jardin du Luxembourg”, the renowned Parisian Park, which is home to the French Senate. Such a place is known for its atmosphere of serenity - carpeted in lush lawns and gravel paths, in the geometric Parterre composition. Stone figures, bronze fountains and ornate stone balusters punctuate the landscape. A musical gazebo and vintage carousel provide entertainment, complemented by the Odeon theatre and street café’s occupying the adjacent streets. It is in this environment, and this tone that the Luxembourg Chair was created.

Frederic Sofia recently redesigned the chair for improved comfort through introducing a more curved ergonomic line. The designer kept the essentiality and elegance of the original design whilst bringing freshness through a contemporary color range and additional typologies. This effective revival broadened the possibilities giving the opportunity for the company to reach contract and domestic niche markets, such as restaurant terraces or private homes.

The 89 year legacy of the Luxembourg chair is testament to its simple and timeless charm. The lightness and inherent sociability of the piece makes it exceptional, transcending the robustness and utilitarian blandness of conventional outdoor public furniture. The silhouette of the chair is routed in the domestic – we relate to its values of home and conviviality.  Overall the Luxembourg chair is special because it is familiar. We welcome it as openly as it welcomes us.
